I applied the same method of instigating internal revolt and waiting for the proper timing to my next war against the Mamluks. The proud history of the Mamluks is a long one–and proud, hence the adjective at the beginning of this sentence. They controlled Egypt and portions of the Middle East for almost three centuries. Their name echoes the sound one makes when accidentally swigging a gulp of sour milk, but don’t say that to them unless you’re prepared for war.

My lessons as a Portuguese coward were hard won. The Byzantine Empire reaped the benefits. No longer were we simply cowards. We were successful cowards. The Ottomans were ruined. The Mamluks, who by this time stretched from Libya in the west to the Persian Gulf in the east, were next.

It took them the better part of a year to put down a brutal rebellion of Syrian nationals. I massed my forces, called a Holy Crusade, and struck. Two massive armies swept into the Middle East. One swallowed the rich coastal territories. The other struck deep into the desert. My fleet from Byzantium disgorged a third army in Alexandria, putting the Mamluks’ most treasured jewel to siege.

The Mamluk’s allies abandoned them to their fate. Their armies were broken. City after city opened its gates to my unrelenting forces. With this victory, the Mediterranean would once more taste the might of Rome renewed!

Then I got a crash to desktop.
