People make this mistake when they're rushing. Take a second, pal. Think it through. Accept means to receive or to agree to.

Yoda accepted Luke as his student.

Except means to exclude (easy to remember, right? they both start with the letters 'exc').

The ship was the fastest in the galaxy except for the Millennium Falcon.
