core, corps

core, corps

A core is the center of something, such as an apple core or the Earth's core. A corps is an organization or group of people acting together, hence Marine Corps or press corps. Despite the 's,' it's a group noun so treat it as in the singular, e.g. "The press corps was late," not "The press corps were late."
