Style Guide of Common Errors in English Grammar for Writers

States (U.S.)

State names are spelled out when used alone. When used with a city name or in a table state names are condensed. State names are further condensed to a two-letter code for postal addresses. Note that certain condensed abbreviations are similar to the postal code, but the abbreviations take periods while the postal codes do not. The list below includes the state name first, then the condensed version, then the postal version. Note that eight states (Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, Utah) are never condensed but do have postal codes.
