vain: excessively proud or obsessed with one's appearance. Now excuse me while I apply my eye wrinkle cream. A vain effort is a fruitless, pointless one.

vane: a rotating or moving blade as on a windmill

vein: a small vessel for carrying blood through the body; a mass of rock or minerals (e.g. a vein of gold)
