Named the Titans until 1963, when they were boringly renamed because they changed ownership and played near LaGuardia Airport, the Jets became the first AFL team to beat an NFL champion in Super Bowl III (technically called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game until the following year in Super Bowl IV). Due to my misfortune of being born too late, I missed the Jets' lone victorious championship. Yes, there are teams who are in more dire straits than the Jets. Jets fans don't hold the monopoly on team anguish, but the drought has been long and full of heartbreak. Repeated 6-10 misery would almost be preferable to near-misses in the playoffs and colossal collapses in the wake of anticipated greatness.

Like the old helmet. Hate the 1978-97 one. In addition to being stupid, the 78-97 design is forever associated with a myriad losing seasons thanks to Joe Walton, Bruce Coslet and Rich Kotite. I remember when the color black became cool and popular. The Jets put a black line around the logo. You can put all the lipstick you want on a pig. It's still a pig.

Founded in 1960 as the New York Titans in the AFL. Renamed New York Jets in 1963.
