Strictly speaking, the left side of the Steelers helmet is always black. The logo is on the right side. However, I wanted to put a non-realistic left-sided helmet here because that's what I use for football simulator game graphics. The team was renamed from the Pirates to the Steelers to reflect Pittsburgh's steel industry. When I learned this as a kid, my response was, "guh?" What a stupid name for a team. I thought it meant they were thieves or something. Steelers. The logo itself represents the three ingredients of steel.

Rare alternate helmet

The original team colors were gold helmets and black uniforms. In the early 20th century, gold meant yellow (see the Packers whose official colors are green and gold). The above is a rare alternate helmet. The one year the Steelers used the gold (yellow) helmet with logo, the wording was 'Steel' not 'Steelers.' If you said, "Who cares?" You are absolutely right.

Founded in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates. Renamed the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1940.
